Saddam Hussein's capture and the secret role of the Kurds

By Foreign Editor David Pratt

The Capture of Saddam Hussein

Exactly one week ago at 3.15pm Baghdad time, a historic announcement was made by Paul Bremer, "Ladies and gentlemen, we got him!" Saddam Hussein, Iraq's most wanted man, had been captured. The news sent shockwaves around the world, marking a significant milestone in the global fight against terrorists and tyrants.

Key Players in the Hunt

The details leading up to Saddam's capture had remained shrouded in secrecy. However, it has been revealed that the Kurds played a pivotal role in tracking down the former dictator. Qusrat Rasul Ali, leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), led a special forces unit dedicated to hunting down former Ba'athist regime leaders. The PUK had previously been successful in capturing top-ranking officials and had an extensive intelligence network in place.

A Joint Operation

Last Saturday, the US launched Operation Red Dawn, a mission aimed at capturing Saddam Hussein. The Fourth Infantry Division, along with Kurdish fighters, surrounded two farms near al-Dwar, Saddam's hometown. It was during this operation that the infamous "spider hole" was discovered, leading to Saddam's capture. Although the US initially downplayed the Kurdish involvement, it became apparent that the PUK had been instrumental in providing critical intelligence and on-the-ground support.

Conspiracy Theories

As with any significant event, conspiracy theories began to emerge. Some suggested that Saddam had been held by a Kurdish splinter group for several weeks before being handed over to the Americans. Others claimed that the capture was staged, pointing to peculiar details in the photographs released by the US military. However, such theories are often fueled by speculation and lack substantial evidence.

Exploring Hotels in the Region

In the aftermath of Saddam's capture, the focus on Iraq shifted towards rebuilding and attracting visitors to the region. The country's tourism industry had suffered greatly due to the instability and violence associated with the former regime. However, efforts were underway to revive the hospitality sector and showcase the country's rich history and culture.

Hospitality Options

With security measures improving and the situation stabilizing, a few hotels started to emerge in the major cities of Iraq, offering accommodation to both tourists and business travelers. These hotels aimed to provide international standards of service while highlighting the unique cultural experiences that Iraq has to offer.

Baghdad's Luxury Escapes

One of the prominent hotels in Baghdad is the Al-Rasheed Hotel, a luxury property that boasts stunning views of the Tigris River. The hotel offers a range of amenities, including spacious rooms, fine dining options, and comprehensive business facilities. Another notable establishment is the Babylon Hotel, known for its opulent decor and world-class service. Both these establishments cater to discerning travelers seeking comfort and convenience during their stay in the Iraqi capital.

Exploring Kurdistan

For those looking to venture outside of Baghdad, the Kurdish region offers its own unique charm. The picturesque city of Erbil, also known as Hewlêr in Kurdish, has seen a rise in the number of hotels catering to the growing tourism demand. The Divan Erbil Hotel is a popular choice, offering modern accommodations and proximity to the city's attractions. Others may prefer the traditional hospitality of smaller guesthouses where they can immerse themselves in the local culture.

Promoting Tourism

Despite the challenges Iraq faced, there was a renewed determination to promote tourism and showcase the country's historical sites, including the ancient city of Babylon and the stunning landscapes of the Kurdistan region. Efforts were being made to ensure the safety and comfort of visitors, with dedicated tourist police forces and increased security measures in tourist areas.

A Promising Future

Although Iraq's hospitality industry had a long way to go in terms of development and infrastructure, there was optimism that with increased stability and a focus on tourism, the country could attract visitors and flourish in the years to come. The capture of Saddam Hussein marked a turning point for Iraq, paving the way for a brighter future and offering hope for a thriving tourism industry.
